Team Composition

The team members and volunteers can join any of the five departments.
They have the unique opportunity to work with modern vehicle technologies, including electric powertrains, vision systems powered by neural networks, autonomous control systems, and everything in between.

Perception

  • Collecting data for all sensors such as cameras, radar, lidar, GNSS, and more
  • Develop new algorithms and improve previous algorithms for perceiving objects, road markings, and location.
  • Develop data fusing for all sensor algorithms.

Vehicle Systems

In this team, you will create and verify CAD design in Solidworks and implement a mounting system for the sensor suite on the Chevy Bolt. You will also utilize the Chevy Bolt’s auxiliary power supply to provide power to sensors, compute platforms, and other devices. You will gain an understanding of all aspects of each sensor in hardware and software.

Safety, Innovation, and Testing

This team is a multi-functional department responsible for system testing, system engineering, system safety, and MoVin challenges. As a member of this team, you will be responsible for defining requirements based on the competition ruleset and validating hardware and software for the entire system, by leading tests on the Chevy Bolt.

Guidance, Navigation, and Controls

This team is a multi-functional department responsible for controls, path planning, localization, mapping, and the Mathworks Simulation Challenge. As a member of this team, you will use MATLAB and Simulink to demonstrate the following:

  • Simulate closed-loop route planning between two points
  • Simulate collision avoidance with dynamic actors
  • Test against scenario variations
  • Generate code and test in simulation
  • Innovation with simulation

You will also create an alternate simulation environment so that virtual testing can be completed before the actual testing on the Chevy Bolt.

Project Management

This team works closely with other departments to handle project planning, scheduling, and deliverable verification for the team. In addition, you will actively manage all Year 2 Project Leadership deliverables, which include the following:

  • Gantt chart
  • Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
  • Team Structure & Succession Plan
  • Decision-Making Model
  • Team Communication Plan
